May 17 Economic Summit on Track

Submitted: February 01st, 2010

The Hamilton Economic Summit (HES), a premier leadership initiative facilitated by the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, today announced more details regarding its May 17, 2010 event at the Hamilton Convention Centre.

The HES Advisory Committee is pleased to confirm that Rob MacIsaac, president, Mohawk College and business leader Don Pether, chair of the Board of Governors, McMaster University, will be this year’s honorary co-chairs (see biographical information at the end of this release).

“We’re delighted that two well respected community leaders are engaged in the success of our third annual Hamilton Economic Summit,” says Tyler MacLeod, chair of the HES Advisory Committee and immediate past president of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. “Their active involvement underscores the importance of this initiative while strengthening our exceptional leadership team.”

Built on the theme Prosperity Now: Acting on Hamilton’s Top Business Opportunities, HES 2010 will showcase the wealth-creating potential of three major initiatives now in play in Hamilton: Pan Am Games, Transportation and Downtown Redevelopment. The focus will be on connecting
investors with new and emerging business opportunities attracting wide attention. The interactive format will include panels and a special presentation highlighting the long-term business impact of the West Hamilton Innovation District anchored by McMaster Innovation Park.

Says MacLeod: “Over the next five years, an estimated $3 billion in new investments will transform our local economy. Our goal is to leverage this increased activity to generate shared prosperity.”

Approximately 150 local, regional and national leaders are expected on an invitational basis. Dr. Nick Bontis, from the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University, will be the moderator.

This year’s summit will also include a lunchtime community forum devoted to realizing downtown redevelopment through the use of innovative investment models. Storm Cunningham, a worldrenowned redevelopment expert specializing in the growing field of restorative economics, will
deliver the keynote address. This interactive forum, which includes lunch, will be open to the public at $60 per person. Organizers expect a sell-out audience of 700 people.

The long-term goal of the Hamilton Economic Summit is to help Hamilton become one of Canada’s top ten mid-size cities measured by its attractiveness to talent and investment. In addition to organizing the annual summit, the part-time HES Secretariat facilitates projects that address needs identified by summit delegates. The Secretariat is currently facilitating a multi-year project to help Hamilton attract and retain highly qualified next generation talent with the competencies to compete in today’s technology-based, knowledge economy. Preliminary results from this project — which includes a survey to identify young people’s perceptions of Hamilton as a talent magnet and proposed networking supports targeting young professionals and entrepreneurs — will be presented at HES 2010, along with outcomes of other community initiatives to spur the local economy.
