QUESTION: My former spouse is an executive and earns approximately $100,000 per year. I work at a retail store and earn approximately $25,000 per year. We were married for 5 years. How much spousal support can I expect to receive?

ANSWER:
Before the question of how much spousal support can be considered, there must first be a determination of whether you are entitled to receive spousal support. A party is not entitled to spousal support merely because he or she earns less than their former spouse. A Court will assess the conditions, needs and means of each of the parties and take into consideration the length of the marriage, the roles played by the parties during the marriage and any agreements signed by the parties that might exist.
If the Court finds that you have an entitlement to receive spousal support, you proceed to the step of calculating the amount. The amount of support payable will depend on a number of factors including the incomes of the parties, the number of children, the amount of child support that is payable if any, etc. In 2007 the Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines were introduced to help determine how much spousal support is payable. The Guidelines provide a range of support levels and the length of time that support is payable. It is important to remember that the Guidelines are merely that—guidelines. They will be taken into consideration by the Court, but the Court will always have the discretion to order an amount that is more or less than the Guideline range. tel: 905.634.3155

ADVERTISING EXPERT, Adam Shields

QUESTION: Should I use a visual (illustration or photo) in my ad?

ANSWER: Absolutely. Visuals are key in grabbing the reader’s attention and drawing them into your ad. When you compare an ad with visuals to an ad that has no visuals the statistics speak for themselves. According to the Newspaper Association of America, “Ads with visuals that occupy about 50% of the total ad space are nearly 30% more likely to attract readers. Plus, when a visual makes up nearly 75% of the ad space, readers are 48% more likely to take note of the ad.”
As you can see, visuals in your ad truly do make a difference in making your ad stand out from the crowd. If you are advertising a specific product, try and get a picture of the product in use. This will help the readers to visualize themselves using the product. If you are advertising a service that doesn’t lend itself to an image, use a picture that symbolizes the message you are trying to get across.

I always recommend for advertisers to use pictures of themselves or staff in their ads because people want to do business with people they know and/or trust.

BRANDING AND MARKETING EXPERT, Jim Albanese

QUESTION: Is it time for a new logo?

ANSWER:
You must first ask yourself. What is a logo?

The logo is the visual identity of your brand. When summed up, it is the central repository for Brand Value (equity).

Seven considerations when designing or revamping your logo:

1. Horizontal shape is important.

     • Horizontal logos are easier to identify and read.

2. Fonts must be legible.
     • Do not mix font styles, keep it simple.

3. Take ownership of colours.
     • Colours attract attention and personalize the logo.

4. Default to black.
     • Create a grey scale version and make sure your colour version defaults to black properly.

5. Scalability is a must.
     • Logos must maintain integrity when scaled up or down.

6. Think about multimedia.
     • Your logo must be consistent in all applications. Print, PowerPoint, Website, TV etc.

7. Establish and maintain usage guidelines. Strive for consistency.
     • No matter where your image is used, or by whom, it must be consistent.
